- Faith in science is not enough – people deserve proof | Alom Shaha - Education must be at the heart of science communication, or else we are simply asking people to 'believe'I am an evangelist. But instead of spreading the gospel or any other religious message, I spend my time trying to share the knowledge of what I believe to be humanity's greatest cultural achievement: science. There is a more mundane term for what I do – "science communication". It's a horrible term, smacking of exactly the kind of thing that turns some people off science. It covers a wide range of activities – from science film-making to working for medical-research charities to going into schools and throwing liquid nitrogen around in a desperate attempt to convince teenagers that "science is fun". Funnily enough, it's not used to describe those who teach science, even though scien...

- Bony reconstruction by reposition of bony chips in suboccipital craniectomy - Forhad Hossain Chowdhury, Raziul Haque, Shafiqul Islam, Mainul Haque Sarkar, Khandkar Ali KawsarNeurology India 2010 58(4):634-636In suboccipital craniectomy where the bone is not repositioned, there may be a significant cosmetic defect due to lack of skull bone in the suboccipital region. It may accompanied by sensory symptoms, including pain. To prevent any cosmetic defect and sensory symptoms we repositioned the bone chips at the craniectomy site in 42 suboccipital craniectomies before the closure of the scalp. At a mean follow-up of 22 months (range: 5-44 months), two patients complained of mild discomfort in the healed wound or of occasional local pain. One patient complained of mild itching at the site. In two patients, bone chips were accumulated at the lower part of the suboccipita...
- 5-Carboxy-2,4-dihydroxyanilinium chloride - In the title salt, C7H8NO4+·Cl−, the organic group is planar with an r.m.s. deviation of 0.0265 Å. An S(6) ring motif is formed due to an intramolecular O—H...O hydrogen bond. The compound consists of dimers due to intermolecular O—H...O hydrogen bonds with an R22(8) ring motif. The dimers are interlinked through strong N—H...Cl and O—H...Cl hydrogen bonds, resulting in a three-dimensional polymeric network. (Source: Acta Crystallographica Section E)
- Dawkins is wrong: faith schools don't blinker children - Kids are bright. We owe it to them to teach all the alternatives of man's origins and let them work it out for themselvesRichard Dawkins's latest media foray highlights the alleged indoctrination of children into believing in the existence of a God and adhering to a particular creed. He claims this invariably creates individuals who cannot think critically or follow an argument through to its logical conclusion. This is demonstrated, supposedly, by their inability to come to exactly the same conclusion as him with regards to the origins of the universe and of mankind.Picking out attendance at a faith school per se as the reason a pupil professes to believing in an alternative narrative to the scientific explanation of these events is, I believe, somewhat disingenuous. From a personal perspe...
- Characterizing the Metabolism of Dehalococcoides with a Constraint-Based Model - Author Summary
Dehalococcoides are strictly anaerobic bacteria capable of detoxifying widespread and harmful ground water pollutants — chlorinated ethenes, chlorinated benzenes, polychlorinated biphenyls and dioxins — largely originated from industry and agriculture sectors. However, how this unique niche has been acquired by these microbes is not well understood, specifically at the level of metabolism. In addition, these bacteria harness energy from the pollutant detoxification process — reductive dechlorination — for their growth; but they grow very slowly. Their slow growth rate, as well as their low growth yield, can hamper bioremediation processes. Thus, in order to obtain an improved understanding of Dehalococcoides' metabolism and the factors limiting their growth, we deve...

- Bladder tissue engineering: Tissue regeneration and neovascularization of HA-VEGF-incorporated bladder acellular constructs in mouse and porcine animal models. - Authors: Loai Y, Yeger H, Coz C, Antoon R, Islam SS, Moore K, Farhat WA Successful tissue engineering requires appropriate recellularization and vascularization. Herein, we assessed the regenerative and angiogenic effects of porcine bladder acellular matrix (ACM) incorporated with hyaluronic acid (HA) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in mouse and porcine models. Prepared HA-ACMs were rehydrated in different concentrations of VEGF (1, 2, 3, 10, and 50 ng/g ACM). Grafts were implanted in mice peritoneum in situ for 1 week. Angiogenesis was quantified with CD31 and Factor VIII immunostaining using Simple PCI. Selected optimal VEGF concentration that induced maximum vascularization was then used in porcine bladder augmentation model. Implants were left in for 4 and 10 weeks. T...

- Composted Oyster Shell as Lime Fertilizer Is More Effective Than Fresh Oyster Shell. - Authors: Lee YH, Islam SM, Hong SJ, Cho KM, Math RK, Heo JY, Kim H, Yun HD Physio-chemical changes in oyster shell were examined, and fresh and composted oyster shell meals were compared as lime fertilizers in soybean cultivation. Structural changes in oyster shell were observed by AFM and FE-SEM. We found that grains of the oyster shell surface became smoother and smaller over time. FT-IR analysis indicated the degradation of a chitin-like compound of oyster shell. In chemical analysis, pH (12.3+/-0.24), electrical conductivity (4.1+/-0.24 dS m(-1)), and alkaline powder (53.3+/-1.12%) were highest in commercial lime. Besides, pH was higher in composted oyster shell meal (9.9+/-0.53) than in fresh oyster shell meal (8.4+/-0.32). The highest organic matter (1.1+/-0.08%), NaCl (0.54+/-0....
